Neighborhood gem celebrates five years of books and community in the Triangle

When Karen Dial opened The Book Jewel in August 2020, it was the culmination of a lifelong dream to open a community book store in her beloved hometown of Westchester. The goal was to create a store that the whole neighborhood could treasure, that served as a “third place” (an informal gathering spot outside of home and work that fosters community), which felt welcoming, peaceful, and had a great selection of carefully curated books for people to browse and shop.

As the store readies to celebrate its fifth anniversary on Saturday, September 6, with a live band, refreshments and a book swap, Karen is proud that that’s exactly what she and her team have built.

The sense of community is right up front. We have a fabulous staff that is dedicated and excited to help people find what they are looking for and everyone is helpful and kind. We want to make sure that every resident in Playa del Rey and Westchester knows that there is an independent bookstore here, ready to serve and welcome them.

David Russell’s murals connect community and history

If you’ve spent any time in Westchester, you’re sure to have seen the colorful mark of muralist David Russell. From the soaring “Welcome to Westchester” mural that can be seen from LAX’s runway, to the youth-inspired design at the local YMCA, to his most recent work at Tomat, David has transformed blank walls into vibrant canvases that bring this community’s story to life.

A senior lecturer at both LMU and Otis College of Art & Design (where he earned his Master’s degree), Westchester resident David has built his career around public art. For him, murals are more than decoration, they’re about connection.

“Public art has the potential to give or connect people to their community,” he says. “Most of my murals reflect the identity of the neighborhoods they serve. They become landmarks, something people feel at home with.”

Celebrating Local Icons Through Murals

David’s murals are rich with symbolism, history, and a sense of place. He often involves students and neighbors in workshops, to ensure the work reflects their voices and memories, not just his own. That collaborative spirit shows up most clearly in three large-scale Westchester landmarks.

Working with local farmers and suppliers to highlight seasonality along with California’s bounty, Tomat features all-day dining, but it’s in the evenings when the cooking turns more serious. The design feels as farm fresh as the ingredients, with red-orange leather seat cushions set against a pale green backsplash. Kick things off with their barbari bread with roasted tomato powder-dusted butter before savoring appetizers like charred seasonal vegetables over a smooth ajo blanco. Main dishes are meant for sharing, and the half Liberty Farms duck is a perfect choice. Deftly cooked with crispy skin, it’s enhanced with a pomegranate and walnut mole. Sticky toffee pudding with a butterscotch sauce and a scoop of burnt milk gelato is the perfect finale.

The Second Saturday Stroll in the Westchester Triangle has been a true celebration of all things local—art, music, dining, and shopping—bringing the community together to celebrate our charming and unique hometown. Each event has offered residents and visitors a chance to enjoy the vibrant culture, meet local business owners, and connect with neighbors in a fun, festive atmosphere.

This year’s events took place on August 9, September 13, and October 11, drawing crowds excited to explore everything Westchester has to offer. From live performances to arts and crafts booths, the strolls highlighted the creativity and spirit that make our community so special. And with a holiday edition planned for December 6, there’s even more to look forward to as the season approaches.
